Saturday 11th May
With the 1st XI sideline by the weather it was left to the 2nd XI to carry the banner for the club. Despite the lunchtime showers and skipper Robson losing the the toss for the second week in a row, the home side set about steady progress on an old fashioned “sticky” wicket, a determined 51 from Gav Pratt enabling them to close on 172 for 9. With a drying wind and pitch concerns were raised as to wether the total would stand up to examination, such concerns were quickly laid to rest as Simon “Rodney” Papworth playing his first game of the season removed 2 opposition batsman in his first over and another in his second to leave the visitors reeling, with the youngsters taking regular wickets the visiting reply never got a start eventually ending all out in the mid 70s. This weeks special mention goes to Rich “none for” Varley who followed his usual economical spell of bowling with a fantastic low catch at about 3 ½ slip, which was on par with Kieron Robson’s sliding / diving effort in the deep off another Ollie Smith “bouncer”. With 2 victories in 2 matches confidence is high for next weeks road trip to Burbage.
